World AIDS Day: A Moment to Reflect, Understand, and Act with Compassion
On 1st
December each year, the global community comes together to celebrate the World
AIDS Day, a day which reminds all of us that it is our duty to nurture people
living with HIV, combats stigma and enhances awareness. In Karunalya Social
Welfare Foundation, the day has a very significant meaning since it embodies
the core of our operations on a daily basis.
HIV has
been consumed by fear, misconceptions and silence over the years. What is
behind the statistic, however, are actual lives of parents, workers,
adolescents, caregivers, who are attempting to make a life of dignity, and who
are subject to the social judgement, which often is more painful than the
disease itself.
Karunalaya
Social Welfare Foundation is still operating at the grassroot to:
Disseminate
proper information regarding the spread of HIV and prevention.
Be
emotionally supportive, and community involvement.
Promote
health care and human rights policies.
We work
in schools, slum communities, youth groups and healthcare workers to create a
society whereby individuals know that HIV does not make a person and it should
never make them.
Making a
Difference at the Local Level:
HIV
stigma is one of the greatest barriers. It makes one not want to seek help,
isolates one to the society and leaves one with emotional burdens that nobody
should bear individually.
In this
World AIDS Day, we urge all people to:
Be
informed and not fictional.
Speak
with kindness
Promote
candid discussions.
Stake up
against discrimination
When we
decide to be empathetic instead of judgemental we provide room to heal.
Hope for
a Brighter Future
The world
has come a long way in its treatment response towards AIDS and it is much aware
and now more vocal than ever before. But it is not the end of the way. We all
have a part to play in creating a future where healthcare is affordable, and
all people are treated humanely.
Today, we
remember the people we lost, rejoice in the gains we have gained and devote
ourselves to the tasks yet unfinished.
We should
all be compassionate, aware, and solid.
